For the 2010/2011 ans 2011/2012 academic years, I was Artist in Residence at Tye River Elementary School in Nelson County, Virginia. I wrote the curriculum and taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in the Gifted Visual Arts program. We were busy bees and craft-making fools in the after-school classes. Each year, my students were responsible for the scenic design for the Christmas play, explored bookbinding, trie their hands at free-form sculpture with recycled materials, practice Japanese kumihimo braiding techniques, and built beautiful coil pots out of clay.
Here are some of the beautiful faces of my 4th and 5th graders proudly displaying their finished coil pots.
